THE SHOOT
fixin' to get a good tilt-down for the last shot of the film, Niels and Sergio peer down at the director, who's gone down into the river to hang a hankie.
So you say you want to shoot in the real jungle? DP Niels Lindelien and Director Kino Gil with the 3D camera on location in Costa Rica's mountains.
Niels Lindelien, our DP, with the twin silicon Imaging 2K Minis mounted on a British INITION 3D rig, monitoring and controlling the 3D computer with an iPad app created by Silicon Imaging. In addition to polarized 3D, the INITION 3D rig can show work in anaglyph images (cyan + red) so the DP can judge the 3D with a simple pair of anaglyph glasses.
We actually can shoot in the jungle because of our buddy R2D3, a cart with the INITION 3D computer and power for up to 10 hours.
In practice, the power fed the sound system and the WiFi hotspot that fed the remote controls to the iPad, so the DP could adjust parallax, interocular distance and convergence from his camera rig.

Kino Gil and Niels Liendelin. A 3D take takes longer to setup and longer to shoot. Both cameras have to be focused perfectly and then convergence and interocular distance are adjusted, a task that is made much easier with the mounted iPad serving as a duplicate of the Inition 3D computer's command screen.

the daytime footage shot will then be digitally processed in a modern variant of the old "day for night" film technique to produce realistic nighttime, moonlit scenes

This is the way anaglyph looks without red+cyan glasses in one of the world's largest monitors.
And for those so inclined, here's the 3D field gear, "R2D3":
(1) HP RGB Monitor, (2) WiFi spot for (3) iPad, INITION (4) 3D computer, (5) Keyboard, (6) trackball, (7) TASCAM digital audio recorder, (8) isolation headphones, (9) Audio Mixer, (10) Power supply inverters (typical 8 hours.)
